How The Georgia Aquarium Works


The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world, and officials estimate that 2.4 million people will visit in its first year of operation. So how did they do it? How did they build habitats for all those animals, and what does it take to keep them fed and healthy? Find out how the aquarium came to be and learn about the animals that call it home.

The Big Tank at The Georgia Aquarium


This exhibit was specially designed to house whale sharks, the largest fish species in the world. Schools of predatory trevally jacks, squadrons of small and large stingrays, enormous goliath grouper, largetooth sawfish and hammerhead sharks all ply the waters of this captive ocean habitat containing more than six million gallons of saltwater. The big tank is 4574 square feet of viewing windows, a 100-foot-long underwater tunnel, 185 tons of acrylic windows and the viewing window is 23 feet tall by 61 feet wide by 2 feet thick.
